Composting can be done in different containers or by making a compost pile. What you choose is up to you.
- At the place of your choice, remove the top layer of soil and set it aside temporarily.
- Using the fork, dig up the soil for better aeration and moisture. You can slightly moisten the place. This will reduce the rapid absorption of moisture from the materials.
- Arrange twigs or stems of plants in one layer on the site. This helps the aeration.
- Spread soil on this carbon layer.
- The next layer is of plants rich in nitrogen – leaves, hay, weeds
- Apply a layer of carbon-rich material – residues of suitable weeds, dry leaves (“brown”)
- Manure layer.
- A thin layer of soil (maybe from the one you separated at the beginning)
- Again a layer of plants rich in nitrogen.
- If you have wood ash, add it as if you were sprinkling sugar on a cake. The ash is rich in minerals.
- A layer rich in carbon (from the “browns”).
- Manure.
- Soil layer
- Carbon-rich layer (“brown”)
- Finish the pile with soil, and put straw or twigs on top as a hat
